However, we wish to place on record that because of the impunity with which he has treated the Nigerian people and the Constitution that he swore to uphold, His Excellency has completely spent the goodwill of majority of Nigerians. Nigerian news: Beware of Pharaohs, Jay Jay Okocha warns Eagles

January 12, 2010 By: correspondent Category: football

Former Captain of the Super Eagles, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, has warned Nigerian players to beware of the Egyptian counterparts- the  Pharaohs as both of them clash today in the African Cup of Nations”They are double champions for a reason and a skillful midfield could carry them to a hat-trick,” warned Okocha.

Egypt are clear that this clash will go a long way in determining how well they will fare in their title defence in Angola.

“Our match against Nigeria will show how we will perform in the following matches, just like the 2008 tournament,” said Egypt skipper Ahmed Hassan.

At Ghana 2008, Egypt got off to a flying start with an impressive 4-2 opening group win over Cameroon in Kumasi and they then went all the way to clinch a record sixth Nations Cup crown at the expense of the same team three weeks later in Accra.

“Nigeria are a strong team, but we are now familiar with all African teams. I told the players they should do their best to realise their own dreams. Read the rest of this entry →

BBC names Drogba African Footballer of the Year

January 09, 2010 By: babalobi Category: nigeria news

BBC had named of Chelsea and Ivory Coast  2009 BBC African Footballer of the Year beating Samuel Eto’o, Michael Essien, Yaya Toure, and Tresor Mputu Mabi to the title.

The results of the poll – voted for by football fans around the world – were announced live from Angola on the BBC African Service Fast Track programme.

Drogba is preparing to lead his country at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, where the Elephants are favourites.

After a disappointing start to the year, Drogba saw his footballing fortunes vastly improve throughout 2009.

Frozen out of Chelsea’s team by then Blues coach Luis Felipe Scolari, the Ivorian striker had scored just one goal in 10 matches by February.

He also earned himself a lengthy ban for a foul-mouthed rant at live television cameras after Chelsea’s elimination from last season’s Champions League.

Didier Drogba

The Ivory Coast captain is preparing to lead his country in Angola

He ended the year, however, with Chelsea challenging for the 2009/2010 English Premier League title and Champions League crown, an FA Cup winner’s medal in the bag and widely recognised as one of the most influential strikers in world football.

On the international scene, he secured qualification for the Ivory Coast at the 2010 World Cup and Nations Cup finals.

He scored six times in five games in the Elephants’ campaign, including the goal which would take them to the World Cup – an equaliser against Malawi which he scored minutes after coming on as a substitute in Blantyre.

Drogba is currently joint top scorer in the Premier League on 14 goals and heads to Angola with Chelsea currently top of the table.

He also claimed recently that he is aiming to break the club’s all-time goal-scoring record, having signed a contract extension to remain at Stamford Bridge until 2012.

Away from football, Drogba has campaigned for greater education in Africa to combat HIV/AIDS and has also raised money to build a new hospital in the Ivorian capital, Abidjan.

Nigerian muslims most peaceful in the world, says Foreign Minister

January 05, 2010 By: correspondent Category: Foreign News

Nigerian Foreign Minister Ojo Maduekwe says US classification of Nigeria as a security rick country is not acceptable  and on Tuesday protested to the US ambassador to the country

“I made it clear, through the US ambassador, to the US government that this is unacceptable to Nigeria,” Maduekwe told journalists after a meeting in his Abuja office with ambassador Robin Sanders.

“I told the US ambassador that listing Nigeria on the second tier of countries that are indicated on the radar of security measures from the US, is an unacceptable New Year gift to a friendly country like Nigeria,” he said.

Washington on Sunday introduced new security measures for passengers flying to the United States from 14 countries, including Nigeria, after a 23-year-old Nigerian was accused of trying to blow up a US jetliner over Detroit on Christmas Day.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a trained mechanical engineer, who had explosives sewn into his underwear, had boarded a Northwest flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.

The minister, a lawyer, underlined that Nigeria “has been traditionally friendly with America (and it is) a country whose 70 million Muslims are among the most peaceful Mulims anywhere in the world”.

How Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab became a terrorist-Obama

January 02, 2010 By: babalobi Category: politics

President Barack Obama few minutes ago gave more insights into how 23 year Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab got indoctrinated into terrorism and attempted bombing a US airliner Christmas day

Speaking through his weekly Radio and Internet site, Obama alleged that al-Qaida affiliate in Yemen apparently ordered the Christmas Day plot against a U.S. airliner, training and arming the 23-year-old Nigerian man accused in the failed bombing,

“This is not the first time this group has targeted us,” Obama said, reporting on some of the findings of an administration review into how intelligence agencies failed to prevent Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab from boarding Detroit-bound Northwest Flight 253.

In his most direct public language to date, Obama described the path through Yemen of Abdulmutallab. He also emphasized that the United States would continue its partnerships with friendly countries — citing Yemen, in particular — to fight terrorists and extremist groups. EU launches project on Nigeria’s Gas and Renewable Energy Resources

December 07, 2009 By: correspondent Category: nigeria news

The European Union will launch a project in Nigeria on the sustainable utilization of gas and renewable energy resources today

The project, funded by the European Union, is called EU SUNGAS and will be implemented by the International Institute for Energy Development (IIED), UK.

The project seeks to improve access to energy by Nigeria’s citizens from renewable and non renewable sources. It will be implemented in the Niger Delta region over the next three years, at a cost of 460 Million Naira (about €2.3 million).

The launching ceremony will take place  at the conference hall of the Valencia Hotel in Abuja, and is expected to give the general public the opportunity to know more about the project.

Expected at the event are the representative of the current presidency of the European Union Sweden, EU member states and the Delegation of the European Union in Nigeria.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the reduction of poverty and conflict and achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and the Nigerian government’s goals of National Vision 20/20 by enhancing the potential for Nigeria to resolve its energy crisis using its own energy resources in a sustainable manner.

This project is also in line with the 7-point agenda of the current administration of the Federal republic of Nigeria and will contribute to the reduction of the impact of Climate Change in the Niger Delta region.

The project would be managed by a group of three national NGOs (Social Development Integrated Centre, Niger Delta Wetlands Centre & Living Earth Nigeria Foundation) and an international NGO (Living Earth Foundation), under the leadership of the UK-based IIED.

At the end of the project it is expected that a reformed policy framework to promote sustainable utilization of gas flaring for community based electricity provision and energy is developed.

In addition, a community based demonstration project for utilization of flared gas to generate electricity for household and enterprise consumption, support to public services in the target communities and five community-based renewable energy facilities. The product would work on scaling up and replicating lessons and successes of the pilot initiatives in order to satisfy the energy service requirements of communities in the Niger Delta.

The project would also initiate networks and build capacity of Institutions managing Energy issues in Nigeria to be able continue work beyond the life of the project, including a multi-stakeholder Energy Policy Forum, a civil society coalition to address energy policy, and Community Energy Councils in target communities.
